Abstract

A new kind of tooling was designed, with steps added, for preventing components’ tilt in the carrier tape pockets, thereby reducing the components’ pick up error rate efficiently. User testing shows that the new design can improve components' pick up error rate efficiently,from 2% to 0.35%.

New Pocket Design of Carrier Tape for Reducing Components' Pick Up Error Efficiently During High Speed Surface Mounting

 Following a report of a user's high pick up error rate in surface mounting when using a supplied carrier tape, a careful study showed that the user's components' bottom is not flat(as shown in pic 1),but carrier tape's bottom is flat(as shown in Pic 2), so these components are easily tilted in such pocket,which caused the high pick up error rate.

 The new design carrier tape pockets drawing illustrated in Pic 3 shows small steps added around the bottom of the carrier pocket, which support the components to prevent small components from tilting or overturning in the pocket.
