Abstract

For electric vehicles, once a Level 2 Electrical Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) unit is installed within a residential dwelling or mounted on a pedestal in a commercial industrial environment the need to ensure functionality is the next meaningful step in the process. At this step a plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) or a plug in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) could be used to validate the EVSE by simply plugging in the vehicle. The best approach to ensure performance and safety of a Level 2 EVSE following the installation process is to test it with an EVSE tester. The tester differs from others on the market because it can test a multitude of functions as described in the paragraphs below. Figure 1 & 2 depict an embodiment of the EVSE tester.

Initially, connecting the EVSE Tester to an in-wall receptacle validates that the in-wall receptacle, which will receive the EVSE unit, has been properly wired and is operational. Preferably, the EVSE tester incorporates several NEMA rated plug types including a 6-20A, a 6-30A and the 6-50A to accommodate the optional cord and plug EVSEs being released into the market place.

Connecting the EVSE Tester to the in-wall receptacle also ensures that the 240VAC receptacle is wired properly line to line and line to ground.

That is, plugging the EVSE tester into the in-wall receptacle establishes that the in-wall receptacle was wired properly, is operational and that the correct voltage will be applied to the EVSE unit. The EVSE tester includes a ground OK circuit to validate that the in-wall receptacle is wired properly. Once the correct wiring is established the EVSE tester will validate that the line to line voltage is within tolerance which is within the range of 216 to 264VAC.

Once it's been determined that the receptacle is wired properly with the correct voltage applied, the EVSE unit is plugged into the EVSE test receptacle. Once the EVSE unit is plugged into the receptacle on the EVSE Tester a green power LED on the EVSE Tester will be illuminated. The EVSE can then be transitioned through three of the EVSE states listed in the SAE J1772 Recommended Practice for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment. The three states include state A charge coupler unplugged, state B charge coupler inserted (not charging) and state C charge coupler inserted and the charge is charging.
