Abstract

A method and system for detecting speed limit of a road based on markings on the road is disclosed. Speed of a vehicle moving on the road is determined based on number of markings crossed by the vehicle. The speed limit of the road is breached if the vehicle crosses a predefined number of markings.

The method and system for detecting speed limit of a road based on markings on the road is disclosed. The speed limit of the road is set by spacing the markings at a predefined distance. The markings on the road may be symbols, lane reflectors, or line markings. A vehicle moving on the road counts the markings using a sensor. The vehicle counts the markings for a predefined interval of time. The speed limit of the road is breached if the vehicle crosses a predefined number of markings within the predefined interval of time. If the vehicle breaches the speed limit, the driver of the vehicle may be alerted.

For example, a standard to determine if a vehicle breaches the speed limit may be that the vehicle needs to cross more than 1 reflector per 10 seconds. If the vehicle is crosses more than 1 reflector per 10 seconds, the vehicle has crossed the speed limit of the road. The spacing between markings on a road is applied such that same standard is maintained for all roads within a geographical region. The standard for spacing may be a national standard or an international standard. In an example, consider that the standard is 1 reflector per 10 seconds. For a highway within a geographical region, for a speed limit of 60mph, reflectors are placed every 1/6th of a mile.
