Global Data Translation Architecture

Engineers are using many different Computer-Aided Drawing (CAD) applications and are creating files in a variety of proprietary formats that often can only be opened or viewed using the same software used to create them. This interferes with design collaboration and design reviews.

A method is needed to provide a cost-effective, automated, enterprise-level translation service that enables design collaboration between designers who are using different design tools, and enables asynchronous design reviews, within the extended enterprise and with customers.

Know Solutions for Design Collaboration / Reviews:
• Designer manually creates file in neutral format before sending for design collaboration. Drawbacks:

- Time consuming for the designer
- Receiver stuck if designer forgets to translate a file and receiver does not have expensive translation tool
• Designer manually creates viewable files for design review. Drawbacks:
- Time consuming for the designer
- Reviewer stuck if designer forgets to translate a file and receiver does not have expensive translation tool

The core idea of this invention is a Global Data Translation Architecture that provides a cost-effective, automated service to convert CAD data to neutral viewing formats to enable design collaboration and review.

The advantages of using this invention instead of the known solutions are:
• Enables translation with interactive applications that do not support batch processing and/or are not intended to run in a client/server environment
• Enable more complex translations involving multiple applications to be run sequentially.

• Enterprise service...
