Abstract

Falls by the elderly are highly detrimental to health, frequently resulting in injury, high medical costs, and even death. Using Popup button and Bluetooth signal switch system which is plugged in two heel of a pair shoe, algorithms are being developed for detecting falls. In this study, tow Bluetooth sender device are plugged in a pair of heel and communicate with the receiver application installed in mobile phone. The algorithm detects the time duration whether longer than threshold. There is no other invention uses tow pop up buttons sychronization mechanism in shoes to detect fall down before.

Abstract

Previous method

1. Altitude difference between foot and waist of a person
a) Method Detail: put two sensors in both foot and waist on a person to continuously calculate the altitude difference. The altitude difference is smaller than threshold indicates the person falls

b) Limitation:
i. hard to detect the altitude difference very precisely between foot and waist of a person
ii. altitude sensor is expensive
iii. it cannot effectively differentiate the fall down and lay down to sleep situation
2. Altitude difference between ground and waist of person
a) Method Detail: put an altitude sensor on ground and another one on waist of people. Then continuously detect the altitude difference

between these two sensors. If the altitude difference less than threshold, indicates people falls down.
b) Limitation:
i. People cannot take the sensor on the ground to anywhere he/she wants to, it makes this method only suitable in patient's home or hospital.

3. Detect foot step rate data, if the foot step rate is not normal,

judge the person fall down.

Need to collect data for a long time to find the foot step model for every different person

iii. Foot step rate sensor is expensive

My method

My innovation is to put two Bluetooth signal senders in both heel of a pair shoe. The pop up buttons of these two senders locate on the surface of both heel bottoms. Both of these two buttons are a little outside of the heel bottom surface, and pressure can push it back into the heel surface.

 When the button pops up from heel surface, the Bluetooth signal sender is turned on, which will send signal out to tell the application in mobile phone that this one of shoes is stepped up and leave ground.

 The application in mobile phone contains two Boolean parameters, each stands for one Bluetooth signal sender. When it receives activated Bluetooth signal from shoes, it will set correspondence parameter from false to true. And when the button is pushed back to heel, the Bluetooth signal sender will tell this application to change this parameter back to false.
