Disclosed is a method and system for automating execution of test cases by monitoring events of a system under test. Upon initiation of testing by a test automation engine, event adapters are created for monitoring events/situations related to components of the system under test as illustrated in the figure. The event adapters are created for each potential event source of the system under test, for example, system log files or hardware components associated with the system under test. An event adapter is specific to a particular log file type or a component type. The event adapter monitors a component associated with the system and if an event is detected, generates an event message. To detect an event, the event adapter encapsulates the logic required to detect situations for that component. For example, an event adapter may be created to monitor log files. In this case, the log file event adapter includes a specification of the regular expressions used to identify events in the monitored log. Similarly, a device event adapter may detect events related to a device. The device event adapter includes specifications of the device attributes that indicate events related to that device. The device event adapters may include any public interface, such as a command line interface, a Common Information Model (CIM) interface, etc. to acquire device attribute readings of the device.
