Abstract

The present invention relates to a use of cartridge containing hollow fibres as a perfusion unit of a reactor. According to the present invention, an open hollow fibre cartridge is used as a perfusion unit. The bottom ends of hollow fibres are blocked by suitable means. This enables the use of the cartridge as a perfusion unit. The cartridge may be used for example in a stirred tank reactor, such as a bioreactor.

Technical field

The present invention relates to a use of cartridge containing hollow fibres as a perfusion unit of a reactor.

Detailed description

According to the present invention, an open hollow fibre cartridge is used as a perfusion unit. The bottom ends of hollow fibres are blocked by suitable means. This enables the use of the cartridge as a perfusion unit. The cartridge may be used for example in a stirred tank reactor, such as a bioreactor.

A plastic capsule of the hollow fibre cartridge is either replaced by a framework only to support the fibres, or only partly removed. The bottom ends of the fibres are blocked, so no cell containing media can enter the fibre cartridge.

The idea is to let the fibres have full access for example to a cell culture in a bioreactor. Since the medium is constantly flushing the fibres, the cells will not clog the pores of the fibres. The "unclogging" effect could be enhanced by letting a peristaltic pump work in a "2 steps forward 1 step back" motion if necessary.

An example of a possible solution is shown schematically in the figures below:
