Disclosed is a method and system for implicitly notifying shopping assistants about customers experiencing difficulty using a self checkout terminal at a retail store.

Often, customers using self checkout terminals in retail stores may not be able to complete a transaction smoothly. For example, customers may find it difficult to scan items, insert coupons, etc. In order to assist such customers, the method and system disclosed herein identifies such customers and notifies shopping assistants at the retail store in an implicit manner. In response to receiving the notification, the shopping assistants assist such customers. Notification is sent to the shopping assistant based on item scan frequency at a self checkout terminal, number of security exceptions breached at the self checkout terminal, amount of time taken by the customer to insert coupons, and amount of time taken by the customer to complete a transaction.

In an example, if the item scan frequency at a self checkout terminal exceeds a predefined threshold, a notification is sent to the shopping assistant. The notification informs the shopping assistant about a potential customer who could use assistance but may not necessarily need assistance.
