Abstract

Light Emitting Diode (LED) bars are increasingly used in xerographic printers to expose the photoreceptor (PR) image area. These LED bars can become contaminated, resulting in image quality defects on the output prints. This idea proposes adding a cam and lead screw mechanism to an LED bar mounted in a xerographic printer to enable automatic cleaning of xerographic debris from the LED bar light exit area. This will maintain continued optimum performance of the printer by automatically ensuring the LED bar is clean. The cam mechanism pulls the LED bar away from the photoreceptor which is in close proximity. The lead screw/motor assembly then advances and returns a cleaning cartridge across the Selfoc® lens of the LED bar assembly. The cleaning bar is translated across the working surface of the LED bar light emission area. The idea is similar to that currently used on charge grid cleaning systems and on other charge devices

LED arrays are increasingly displacing the laser ROS (raster output scanner) in small xerographic printers or Multifunction Printers (MFPs).  LED arrays can get contaminated or oxidized due to the environment they operate in.  To overcome this problem, some manufactures add a manual cleaning wand to clean the lens of the LED bar.  The machine operator is asked to cam off the photoreceptor assembly and then pull the wand with the cleaner head attached along the LED lens.
