Abstract

STRUCTURE® CEL family of polymers are multifunctional, naturally-derived rheology modifiers that are useful in skin care applications for their ability to function as texture modifiers, emulsion stabilizers, moisturization and foam enhancers. This product family includes: MEHEC (INCI: Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose), EHEC (INCI: Hydroxyethyl Ethylcellulose), and HM-EHEC (INCI: C12-16 Alkyl PEG-2 Hydroxypropyl Hydroxyethyl Ethylcellulose). The recommended use level of any of these polymers is between 0.05 - 4% of STRUCTURE® CEL 12000 M, STRUCTURE® CEL 8000 M, STRUCTURE® CEL 4400 E and STRUCTURE® CEL 500 HM in the final formulations. MEHEC (INCI:Methyl Hydroxyethyl Cellulose) rheology modifier is a cellulose derivative containing ethyl and methyl modifications that provide improved surface activity for enhanced stabilization of emulsions and improved rheology & foam properties of cleansing systems. It can also improve the suspending properties. MEHEC is compatible with variety of surfactant systems and permits formulations varying in viscosities.

EHEC (INCI:Hydroxyethyl Ethylcellulose) is a cellulose derivative containing ethyl modifications that provide enhanced viscosity build with fatty quaternium compounds and fatty alcohols in emulsion systems. The lowest viscosity grade of EHEC (STRUCTURE® CEL 4400 E – INCI: Hydroxyethyl Ethylcellulose) is able to thicken up to 70% of alcohol and it suited for clear sanitizer gels applications.

HM-EHEC (INCI: C12-16 Alkyl PEG-2 Hydroxypropyl Hydroxyethyl Ethylcellulose) rheology modifier is a hydrophobically modified cellulose derivative, providing the highest surface activity of all the STRUCTURE® CEL products.  STRUCTURE® CEL 500 HM rheology modifier has a low viscosity in water (500 cps in a 1% aq. soln), however its physical cross-linking via hydrophobic chain interaction along with the chain entanglements can provide a unique rheology,  enhanced texture and improved sensorial properties in emulsions. It is suited for usage in low surfactant systems that are particularly useful in hypoallergenic formulations.

STRUCTURE® CEL polymers are recommended for leave-on and rinse-off skin care formulations. In rinse-off applications, they improve foam creaminess and have broad compatibility with variety of anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactant systems.  In leave-on applications, they act as stability enhancers, viscosity builders, provide non-tacky and elegant after feel and improve skin moisturization. STRUCTURE® CEL polymers also form a protective layer (film).  This property is mainly useful for uniform deposition of UV and skin actives onto the skin.
