New Polyolefin Plastomer Grade for Sealant and Paper Thermal Lamination Applications

The Dow Chemical Company recently developed a new polyolefin plastomer grade named XUS 38611.00, which can be used in fast packaging sealant layer and the functional layer of biaxial oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film for BOPP/paper thermal lamination application.

With melt index of 12 dg/min, density of 0.893 g/cm3 and comonomer content of above 20 wt%, this grade is suitable for various fabrication processes such as casting, extrusion coating and biaxial orientation by tenter frame or double bubble process. Owing to its low melting temperature, this product can meet the market requirements for fast packaging sealant application and functional layer of BOPP film for BOPP/Paper thermal lamination application with faster lamination speed and improved bonding strength. Thickness of the sealant layer and functional layer can be adjusted from 1 micron to 20 micron according to performance requirements.

In one example of co-extruded orientation BOPP film produced by tenter frame process, the film is at least 3 layers: the skin layer comprises homo-polypropylene (hPP) or hPP blended with high density polyethylene (HDPE), the core layer comprises hPP and the other skin layer with lamination functionality comprises XUS 38611.00 which can be thermally laminated with paper.  A variety of additives such as slip agent, anti-block agent, anti-static agent and hydrogenated petroleum resin can be added in...
