Abstract

This disclosure proposes the system and method to assess product safety by computing the confidence index of products by public available data, such as company and product certifications, product inspection history. Confidence index of products can be accessed via searching by the barcode scanning function in the mobile device. The disclosure also provide confidence index of certifications and certification authorities. The simulation experiments show the method is efficient to show the confidence index of products.

   Product safety assessment systems are very important to show safety risks for products or products companies. This disclosure proposes to build products safety assessment systems by public available data, such as company and product certifications, product inspection history.

The method that directly judges the product safety based on product certifications has many disadvantages:


1) The life of a certain product certification is limited. The certification may be overdue


2) Every certification has its scope. The company may use it for a wrong scope or type of product.


3) The certification itself may be faked.


4) The reliability of certifications is based on the certification authorities, so may be variable.

This disclosure proposes the system and method to assess product safety by computing the confidence index of products by public available data, such as company and

product certifications, product inspection history. Confidence index of products can be accessed via searching by the barcode scanning function in the mobile device. The disclosure also provide confidence index of certifications and certification authorities.

   Fig. 1 shows the system architecture of proposed system. Firstly, public available data, such as company and product certifications, product inspection history are collected and synchronized to the database. After validation and verification on this data, the confidence index of product safety are computed by the statistical engine. In the user-end, the customer can scan the product barcode to directly find the confidence index of a certain product.

The key component of the system is the calculation of the confidence index of product safety. The computational steps are listed below:


1) Building the relation network


The relation network between company, certification and certification authority is built based on the public data. The node represents a company, a certification or a

certification authority. The relations between companies and certifications show that the companies own the certifications. The relations between certifications and certification authorities show that certifications are issued certification authorities. (See Fig. 2)
