Abstract

The configuration of IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices) is typically done using an appropriate IED configuration or engineering tool. These modern IED configuration tools allow users to create and configure hundreds of IEDs in a single project. The procedure for the creation of IEDs in a project using an IED configuration tool typically involves the following steps: • User starts the IED configuration tool on a personal computer (PC). • User creates a project using the IED configuration tool. • User creates an IED within the project created in the previous step. For creation of the IED, the user manually enters various parameters such as the product code of the IED, the template to be used etc. in the GUI of the IED configuration or engineering tool and initiates the IED creation. • The previous step of IED creation is repeated sequentially until all the required IEDs have been created within the project.

The configuration of IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices) is typically done using an appropriate IED configuration or engineering tool. These modern IED configuration tools allow users to create and configure hundreds of IEDs in a single project. The procedure for the creation of IEDs in a project using an IED configuration tool typically involves the following steps:


• User starts the IED configuration tool on a personal computer (PC).


• User creates a project using the IED configuration tool.

• User creates an IED within the project created in the previous step. For creation of the IED, the user manually enters various parameters such as the product code of the IED, the template to be used etc. in the GUI of the IED configuration or engineering tool and initiates the IED creation.

• The previous step of IED creation is repeated sequentially until all the required IEDs have been created within the project.

A typical member of the configuration team needs approximately two minutes to enter all the details needed for one IED creation in a common IED configuration or engineering tool. The actual device creation time taken by a common IED configuration or engineering tool, i.e. the pure computing time of that computer program, is about six minutes per IED on an average. A typical substation project contains 400 IEDs. This means that a user has to enter 400 times manually information for the creation of 400 IEDs using a common IED configuration or engineering tool.

If the user continues to sit in front of his PC with the IED configuration tool open, one IED creation takes therefore in total about eight minutes of user's time in the configuration tool. However, if the user enters the required information for one IED, initiates the IED creation and then tries and fruitfully uses the remaining six minutes doing some other work, it involves a context-switch every six minutes that can be irritating to the user and can lead to errors in configuration done by the user. Typically, for this reason, customers employ a member from their configuration team to dedicatedly work on the creation of IEDs. This means that since each device creation consumes about eight minutes of user's time, hence, the creation of 400 IEDs will take 3200 minutes or 53.3 hours or about 7 working days to create the project containing 400 IEDs.

Currently, users who want to create and configure IEDs are dependent on IED configuration tools provided by the IED vendor. Contemporary IED configuration tools do not provide an automated mechanism to facilitate the easy initial creation of hundreds of IEDs. Thus, the user has to sit in front of PC for long time.
