Abstract

Disclosed is a system that addresses the issue of restrictive download data quotas on mobile devices by delegating mobile data transfer to other devices in the vicinity. This addresses the problem where a user has used up their monthly data quota, and they wouldn't be able to download any data via 3G, or would incur a significant cost in doing so.

Smart crowd-delegated data transfer for mobile devices

If a user has used up their monthly data quota for a mobile device, they wouldn't be able to download any data via 3G, or would incur a significant cost in doing so. Currently, potential solutions are as follows:
Solution 1. Pay for additional data and incur additional cost of data download Drawbacks:

Additional cost incurred, whilst other mobile users in the vicinity may have unused data quota
Solution 2. Connect to the internet via an intranet over a Wi-Fi connection Drawbacks:

Access must be available to an intranet with internet connectivity. Solution 3. Ask another user, such as a friend, to download the data Drawbacks:

The user must be at a location where friends are available to download the data and they have a data quota available.

This disclosure describes a method for transparently delegating the data request to other mobile devices within the local vicinity.

This disclosure describes a mechanism to delegate mobile data request to other clients where mobile data access is unavailable to the requesting client. Situations like this may occur where the client itself has no network coverage or has no remaining data quota.

The mobile device would do this by utilising an ad hoc wireless network to query other mobile devices in the local vicinity and delegating the data request to those devices with available data quota (and which are subscribed to this service). Advantages:

1. Provides access to mobile data to the user without significant additional cost

2. Makes use of unused data quotas from other users, making the best use of d...
