Image/Video Search from Mobile Devices to Aid Law Enforcement Investigations

It is very common for people to take pictures or videos of anything at any time using various devices like cell phone cameras. It is feasible that one of those images or videos could contain useful information to law enforcement, and may produce a clue or lead in the resolution of the case. For example, a crime occurs at or near Global Positioning System (GPS) location X on or about the date/time Y. The "owner" of the image/video might be totally unaware that their picture could help solve a crime. Law enforcement routinely obtains videos and still images from fixed surveillance devices in the vicinity of the crime (e.g., Automated Teller Machine cameras, traffic cameras, etc.). These images and videos either remain on the remote device and/or are uploaded to an Internet repository. Many are GEO-tagged with the GPS coordinates where the image or video was taken. Each is also date and time stamped. If they could add to that evidence a collection of all other pictures and videos taken at about the same time and location by the average citizen, this would aid the investigation.

The invention is a method to search all of these images for a match on parameters of a date/time range along with a GPS coordinate range. In other words, return all images that were recorded at or near this location on or about a specific date and time.

The app performs a local...
