Abstract

This document discloses a tool for lifting or otherwise handling wind turbine tower sections. The tool includes a lifting yoke / bracket that includes adaptor holes for one or more inserts. The inserts shown in this document are either 1) bushings with an off-center (i.e., eccentric) bolt hole, or 2) plates with bolt holes arranged along a radius of curvature. Several sets of plates may be provided in the latter type of arrangement, with the plates having bolt holes along different radii of curvature corresponding to different sizes of tower sections.

Tool for lifting wind turbine tower sections

In use, one or more of the brackets are placed on the flange of a tower section. The inserts are positioned in the adaptor holes. If the inserts are bushings, they are rotated until the bolt holes are aligned with bolt holes on the flange of the tower section. If the inserts are plates, a plate with bolt holes aligned along the same radius of curvature as the bolt holes on the flange of the tower section is selected. The inserts may then be bolted to the flange to help secure the lifting tools to the tower section. Finally, slings or other lifting equipment may be secured to the lifting tools so that the tower section can be lifted.
