A method and system for targeting a user’s role in sponsored search advertising is disclosed. Role of a user may be a role in the real world, or a role which user chooses to play. The user will see sponsored search ads based on user’s chosen role, or derived role. Description

Disclosed is a method and system for targeting a user’s role in sponsored search advertising.  Typically, search engines are used for exploring the content in World Wide Web by giving a keyword as input.  Keywords are often very short and comprise on or two words.  In this case, it may be difficult to return the required results to a user based on just keywords of one or two word lengths and user’s search history as input.  In order to assist the search system in providing the better algorithmic results, user chooses a role the user wants to be in before making a keyword search, and algorithmic results are served based on the role.  The sponsored search advertisers can target the role the user to drive the relevant ads to the user’s who matter to them.

In the system, initially a user selects a role for making a search.  Roles are pre-defined, and mostly represent the roles which are available in physical world.  For example, doctor, teacher, student, engineer, software techie etc.  These roles are recommended to the user based on his online activities.  However, the u...
