Method to dynamically present the best performing OS installation drive

During an operating system (OS) installation, the OS installer detects all available drives and presents a full listing to the user. This listing does not take into account any performance characteristics of the candidate drive(s). The user then selects which drive to use for the installation.

This invention allows the OS installer to detect the best performing drive and display it as a default option to the user. The system displays all remaining drives in the order of their performance along with their performance metric.

Current method to start OS installation process:


1. Copy install program from CD to memory


2. Execute the install program


3. Load in box drivers


4. Allow user to load any additional drivers


5. Probe all devices


6. List all available drives in the order discovered

Proposed method to start OS installation process:


1. Copy install program from CD to memory


2. Execute the install program


3. Load in box drivers


4. Allow user to load any additional drivers


5. Probe all devices


6. Determine performance characteristic of each drive


7. List all available drives in the order of performance

The user does not need to have any knowledge about the performance of candidate drives.

Prior art reveals an application which uses software profiles to load OS and software to different logical partitions. (US 7386698)
