Instant Messaging Group History Recall For Similar Participants

Instant messaging (IM) clients allow users to save their chat history. This is even possible for group chats. It is possible to recall and display individual group chat histories because the communication is one-to-one. However, when a user creates a new group chat with the same participants as a previous group chat, the application does not recall the history.

Disclosed is a system and method to display multi-person group chat histories for similar participants.

Implementation


1. A new group chat is created with users n, n+1, ... m

2. The system must perform a lookup to determine if any chat histories exist for the same set of users


3. The system looks for all chat histories that are group chats that include user n


4. The user removes from the subset all chats that don't also include user n+1

5. The system continues to refine the available histories for each user until the final user, m


6. At this point, the remaining chat histories include every single user.


7. Show the chat histories


A. Above the current group chat window based on date/time.


B. As clickable references, that once clicked expand the previous history
