Mechanish for Automated Notification of Java Stack Traces and Selectable Logging Messages

In an environment where dozens of running Java* applications create hundreds of various log files, which collectively have millions of log entries, there is a steep cost associated with having people manually read through the log files looking for errors and stack traces that would indicate bugs or actionable events. In addition, it is quite easy for people to overlook a file or particular entries in a file. Furthermore, many duplicate work issues (e.g., bug reporting) can be submitted because people may not know that a particular error has already been reported, or, people have to spend time investigating whether or not the bug report has been submitted for the error. This also extends the time required to complete the quality assurance process after a release.

The disclosed solution is a utility program that parses log files and provides immediate notification when certain logged events occur. The program programmatically parses the log files generated by Java applications, identifies occurrences of Java exception stack traces and logged messages that match certain logging levels (e.g., 'FATAL' or 'ERROR'), and provides notification that action is required (by sending an email and/or creating a new work item in a bug tracking system).

The following features distinguish the program from simple log parsing programs:

• The logging levels to be reported is configurable on a...
