Abstract

The invention provides a preview system and method for radiological imaging including mobile C-arm. The preview system described herein comprises a low resolution fixed focal length monochrome or a color charged coupled device (CCD) camera for centering an anatomy and indicating a preview image in a display monitor. The CCD camera is retractably placed in front of an X-ray port during an aiming procedure. Apart from anatomy centering and preview, the preview system provides accurate depiction of collimator position, iris position, magnification mode indication, field of view indication, image rotation.

FIELD OF INVENTION

The invention generally relates to radiological imaging and more particularly to previewing and centering of region of interest of radiographic images.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Present day radiological imaging units generally use digital image capturing devices to allow immediate image preview. Such digital image capturing techniques allow advanced image processing and enhance image display. Another general practice in radiological imaging followed for reducing radiation dosage received by a subject is use various means for centering the region of interest before an image acquisition.

Conventionally, a LASER Aimer is used for centering the region of interest of a subject for radiological imaging. However, technology used by the LASER Aimer has several limitations. LASER Aimers are expensive and involve precision mechanical designing and alignment during manufacturing and servicing. Yet, parallax error is observed when the subject is nearer to the X-ray source. Further, LASER radiation is hazardous and may cause irritation to eyes on prolonged exposure. Furthermore, the LASER Aimer does not provide information about the field of view (FOV), magnification mode coverage area, collimator and iris position and outline information for framing the subject. Also, exact orientation, rotation and position of a final radiographic image cannot be visualized.

Hence there exists a need for an improved system and method for previewing and centering of region of interest of radiographic images.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The invention provides a preview system and method for radiological imaging including mobile C-arm. The preview method described herein, proposes use of a low resolution fixed focal length monochrome or a color charged coupled device (CCD) camera for centering an anatomy and indicating a preview image in a display monitor. Apart from anatomy centering and preview, the preview system described herein provides accurate depiction of collimator position, iris position, magnification mode indication, field of view indication, image rotation.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

A preview system and method for radiological imaging including mobile C-arm is disclosed. The preview method described herein, proposes use of a low resolution fixed focal length monochrome or a color charged coupled device (CCD) camera for centering an anatomy and indicating a preview image in a display monitor. The preview system is readily applicable to radiological imaging units used for surgical environment that have drapes with transparent polyester film or acrylic window in the area of radiation exit port.  Rest of the area uses the conventional draping material.  Further, for general purpose radiological imaging applications, there is no modification or change is required.
