Abstract

Disclosed is a new Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). The core idea of this invention is to mount an apparatus within and/or around a vehicle's steering column to capture the rotational energy of the steering wheel that is generated as the vehicle operator turns the wheel, and then send that captured electricity to a battery/capacitor/actuator.

Modern vehicles require electricity to power various features (e.g., lighting, heated seats, power windows, etc.). Furthermore, newer hybrid-electric or fully electric vehicles require power for the vehicle's drivetrain. In order to be more efficient (and to increase range), any and all sources of electricity that are generated onboard the vehicle need to be considered. There are a few ways to do this today, such as capturing energy released during braking (regenerative braking), and others.

No prior art was found related to generating electricity using rotational energy as described in this invention. There are no drawbacks to known and implemented solutions, however, the solution proposed merely adds another way to generate electricity onboard a vehicle.

The core idea of this invention is to mount an apparatus within and/or around a vehicle's steering column to capture the rotational energy of the steering wheel that is generated as the vehicle operator turns the wheel, and then send that captured electricity to a battery/capacitor/actuator. This is a new Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). The energy generated is returned to the onboard battery/batteries for normal use during the vehicle's operation or directly to actuators that will use the energy immediately. This invention complements other known solutions for generating electricity onboard a vehicle.
