Configuration Bus

Disclosed is a system and method for utilizing a configuration bus having a real time notification mechanism for alerting interested subscribers about the change to an IT resource component.

Various issues with gathering configuration information from IT devices may occur. In today's complex IT environments, there are often several IT device management applications that require device information in order to perform their function. Each of these management applications will "inventory" configuration about an IT device, and store it for their own use. This results in the following problems:

Resource utilization - A significant amount of device resource (CPU, memory, storage) can be devoted to simply gathering and storing information about itself. This problem can grow linearly as more IT management applications are added.

Network bandwidth - As more IT management applications scan for IT device data,

more network bandwidth is required to transmit results.

Data discrepancies - Since different IT management application tools perform device

scans on different intervals, the same information from two different IT management applications may not be the same, causing confusion on behalf of the party looking at the separate data.

Currency - In order to reduce the impact to the IT infrastructure, device scanning

often has to be reduced, resulting in out dated information. As IT infrastructures migrate to a more On Demand environment, this problem is expected to increase.

A configuration bus is utilized to:

Reduce the amount of resources required on IT devices to fulfill configuration data needs.

Reduces the amount of network bandwidth required for the collection of IT device

configuration

Provide a mechanism to keep the IT configuration data in different IT management

applications synchronized

Provide a mechanism to keep the IT configuration data in different IT management

applications current

Provide a mechanism to provide just-in-time configuration data to IT management

applications in a dynamic, constantly changing environment.

A publish/subscribe configuration bus is created, allowing subscription by management products. Configuration information is placed on this bus by the device itself, either at a user defined interval, when changes occur, or a combination of both. The configuration information is stored locally on the device for quick retrieval by management products, so as to avoid repeated multiple scans on a device. Security is handled by the bus infrastructure, protecting the data against improper access (e.g. hacker gaining critical information). Proxy agents can exist for devices where agents cannot reside (e.g. network devices).

For each device, the following information is sent on the bus:

Initial publish - When the configuration agent is installed/started, it sends a notification to the bus that an initial scan is available indicating what data is available (e.g. hardware configuration, i...
