Mobile Smart Device to Industrial System Direct Interface

Mobile ‘smart devices,’ such as ‘smart phones,’ are very common and have applications that are used for a variety of reasons.  This paper describes the use of a mobile smart device as the direct interface link to industrial systems.

There is a need on different types of industrial equipment to interface to those systems for a number of reasons.  This is typically being done by using a computer connection, handheld programming device that is purchased, a custom designed device, and/or a display/keypad on the system.  Such secondary devices may be eliminated by using one of the most common everyday devices available to accomplish this interface, via a direct connection to a mobile smart device (i.e., smart phones such as iPhone, Android, Blackberry, etc.).

The interface is described below:

-     The use of a mobile smart device as a means to:

o   Update the industrial system software.

o   Interface to the industrial system security settings through the built-in mobile smart device software or custom software programmed to the mobile smart device.

o   Connecting the mobile smart device to the industrial system either through a wireless communication link, such as Bluetooth, other wireless interface, or communication cable.

o   Using the mobile smart device to update system setting parameters, view system status, display maintenance reminders, and perform diagnostic functions.
