I. INTRODUCTION

In August 1984, IMC contracted Kellogg t o perform a study of various energy reduction modification schemes t o i d e n t i f y a c o s t e f f e c t i v e approach t o revamping the Number 2 Ammonia Plant a t S t e r l i n g t o n , Louisiana.

                      Study was t o determine an energy savings r e t r o f i t based on an economic r a t e of return f o r c u r r e n t market c o n d i t i o n s . The demonstrated p l a n t production r a t e was used a s the b a s i s f o r the study and the subsequent r e t r o f i t project. A l a r g e l i s t o f r e t r o f i t f e a t u r e s were evaluated t o develop the revamp. We were a l s o considering a s i m i l a r revamp of the Number 1 U n i t . Therefore, the two programs needed t o complement one another. Since i t made sense i n one o f the two p l a n t s t o p a r a l l e l ammonia c o n v e r t e r s , the study focused on modifying the synthesis loop o f the number 2 p l a n t t o u t i l i z e a new intercooled ammonia converter. In a d d i t i o n t o studying converter o p t i o n s , the study considered increasing the size o f the ammonia c o n v e r t e r above a "standard" volume t o achieve energy savings comparable t o using mole sieves. The s t u d i e s indicated t h a t the same e f f i c i e n c y could be r e a l i z e d without spending a d d i t i o n a l monies.

The study was completed i n October 1984 and provided IMC w i t h a unique s y n t h e s i s loop revamp. The study i d e n t i f i e d the following energy reduction program.

- Additional b o i l e r feed water (BFW) preheating i n the methanator e f f l u e n t exchanger 114-C1.

- Addition of a hydraulic t u r b i n e 107-JHT and changeout of CO, re'noval S U l P e r r t L U l-l6w%x

- Added water wash t r a y s t o 101-E.


- Addition of synthesis compressor s u c t i o n c o o l e r 134-C1/C2.

- lOlJ Air Compressor Upgrade.

- Modification t o the low and high pressure synthesis compressor cases.
