Disclosed is a method for rewarding customers with achievements for using a self checkout lane in a store. The achievements are rewarded based on proficiency of the customer to perform operations at the self checkout lane. For example, the achievements may be one or more of, but not limited to, 100th use of self checkout lane, completing a checkout in less than N seconds and performing a faster checkout than average based on number of items billed by the customer. Additionally, the achievements may be communicated to the customer using one or more of, but not limited to, Point of Sale (POS) screen, sale receipt during checkout and social network site of the customer. The achievements are rewarded to encourage the customer to use the self checkout lane.

Thus, the method disclosed herein assists in encouraging a customer to use the self checkout lane in a store. Further, the method assists in saving labor costs for a store since no employee is required to be present at checkout point of the store.
