Disclosed is a method and system for building self tests for reporting tools .

In a scenario, the method including designing a report generator with a pluggable interface between a data analysis portion and a content formatting portion of the report generator. The data analysis portion is the portion of the report generator which performs the data analysis that goes into a report . The content formatting portion is the portion of the report generator which formats the report content into an output file .

The method further includes using the pluggable interface to create a second report formatter which consumes the data for validating content . In accordance with the scenario, the second report formatter instead of generating a report validates the content of the report.

In an exemplary scenario, the method includes building a self test for a tool used for analyzing database snapshots. The tool reads a database snapshot and generates one of a text report and a spreadsheet report . The report can include information such as, but not limited to, a list of database queries in the snapshot and expert system analysis of the database queries. In accordance with the exemplary scenario, the method includes building a back-end package to validate that expected lists, expert system tests and so on are present in the analysis.
