Abstract

A surgical system includes: 1) a tissue clamping and fastener forming system 2) a fastener introduction and transection mechanism The 2 system elements linked through a computer controlled auto-following system in which the position and location of the approximation and forming mechanism is followed by the fastener introducing mechanism. In one embodiment, a separate device could be used to hold tissue and provide adequate compression, while still providing access to a stapling and transecting device.

Continuous Fastening - 2 Interacting Devices for a Robot with Auto-Following

SUMMARY

A surgical system includes:

1) a tissue clamping and fastener forming system

2) a fastener introduction and transection mechanism

The 2 system elements linked through a computer controlled auto-following

system in which the position and location of the approximation and forming mechanism is followed by the fastener introducing mechanism. In one embodiment, a separate device could be used to hold tissue and provide adequate compression, while still providing access to a stapling and transecting device.

DESCRIPTION

1. A surgical system consisting of 2 elements

2. The 1st element being a device with a shaft , jaws and a handle that interfaces with a person, robotic controller of other drive method

3. The 1st element consisting of at least one pivotable jaw member that pivots to affect the compression of tissue

4. A 2nd element being a device containing a plurality of fasteners

a. Fasteners being staples

b. Fasteners being single point barbs

c. Fasteners being an mechanical means to approximate tissue

5. The 1st and 2nd devices interfacing to drive a fastener through the tissue

a. This interface consisting of a window where the fastener is driven through in device 1

6. One device providing a forming means to form the fastener to a tissue holding shape

a. This forming surface being an anvil on one of the jaws of device 2

b. This anvil being opposite the tissue exposure window through...
