Disclosed is a system and method for improving Reliability Availability, Serviceability (RAS) using

redundant SAS

® switches, soft switches and power controls in a SAS storage system.

Redundant SAS switch controllers and redundant soft switches on separate cards are utilized to eliminate service interruptions in SAS storage systems. Failing SAS switch modules and soft switches can be replaced while redundant components continue to provide power and a functional SAS link. Utilizing the redundant ports of a SAS disk drive along with redundant circuits on separate switch cards uninterrupted operation can be achieved assuming failed components are replaced before the redundant path fails. Each SAS disk drive has its SAS ports wired to 2 separate switch cards while power is dotted or twin tailed to each SAS drive individually.

This design eliminates storage system interruptions due to hardware faults caused by hardware failures in soft switch, power control components and SAS switch modules.

The figure below shows redundant port cards. Because the port cards are completely independent, when one port card encounters any failure in the soft switches or SAS communications link the other card continues to operate uninterrupted.
