A method and system for creating an animated 3D CAPTCHA is disclosed.  The method displays an animated 3D representation of a 2D CAPTCHA that makes it difficult for automated processes to solve the CAPTCHA.

Description

Disclosed is a method and system for creating an animated 3D CAPTCHA.  The method creates an animated 3D CAPTCHA by displaying a surface motion over a 2D CAPTCHA that distorts the appearance of the 2D CAPTCHA thereby making it difficult for automated processes to solve.

The method and system involves initially creating a 2D graphical representation of a CAPTCHA string.  The 2D graphical representation of the CAPTCHA string may be undistorted, moderately distorted, or highly distorted.  Thereafter, the 2D CAPTCHA is mapped onto a virtual 3D surface.  The virtual 3D surface enables 3D animation and effects to be applied on the CAPTCHA.  Accordingly, the virtual 3D surface may be animated to distort the appearance of the CAPATCHA.  To animate the CAPTCHA, an oscillating wave effect or multiple overlapping wave effects may be applied on the CAPTCHA.  Here, an oscillating wave effect or multiple wave effects of certain magnitude and nature may be used to animate the 3D surface.  The nature and magnitude of oscillating waves may be varied in accordance with configuration settings of a virtual camera to further complicate the appearance of the CAPTCHA.  A virtual camera may be used for enhancing the animated display of a CAPTCHA.  The configuration setting of a virtual camera may correspond to field of view and surface orientation of a displayed CAPTCHA image.  The variation of magnitude of oscillating waves may be performed in such a manner that certain parts of the CAPTCHA either become invisible or significantly distorted.  Additionally, visible parts of the CAPTCHA m...
