Secure Debit Card

Described is an invention that allows a user to set a "motion password" on a credit card/debit card/transactional device, regardless of the method used to contain the information (magnetic strip, computer chip, etc.). This is possible by using a tiny cost-effective accelerometer [1], the thickness of a piece of paper. The accelerometer would track and store movement on the card. In this particular case, the movements that occur before the credit card is swiped are applicable. The invention works as follows:

1. Customer trains the card to initially set the motion password. If this motion password is not initially set, then the card behaves like a normal card (i.e., no extra security). If the same motion sequence is consistently used a certain number of times, the card initiates that sequence as their motion password.

Examples of movements the card could differentiate between include:

Tapping card on an edge

Tapping card in the corner

Tapping the card on its plane (i.e., laying the card down flat)

2. After the motion password is initially set, the device that contains information on the card (be it a magnetic strip, computer chip, etc.) is rewritten [2]. The card would be rewritten with "restriction flags" to be determined by the card issuer, including (but not limited to):

Request ID to complete transaction

Flag charge on bill

Limit charge to a preset amount

Disabling the credit card

3. When the customer wishes to complete a transaction, they fi...
