Abstract

Intelligent completions have multiple control lines attached to the outside of down hole completion components. These control lines transmit power and data communication to a variety of tools such as gauges, flow control devices, and similar tools. These control lines have to be disconnected, parted, or sheared when the tubing or completion equipment is removed from the well bore. This invention provides a clamp that will protect the control line during installation and a shear device to shear the control line for retrieval. This clamp shears the control line with a die when a shear sub is parted with tension.

Title:  Cable shearing device for use with shear joint

Description

Intelligent completions increasingly use hydraulic, electric, or fiber optic control lines for power transmission, measurement, and data communication.  These control lines must be protected when the completion is being installed in the well bore.  This invention is a clamp that is installed across a shear joint to protect the control line during installation.

A shear joint is completion tool that provides a location to part the tubing or completion string at a desired location.  The shear joint is typically held together with shear screws or shear pins or some other type of shearing device.  However other methods such as shift to release method, or tubing pressure release method could be used instead.  The control lines are run across the outside of the shear joint on th...
