Method and System for Automatic Determination of TV Series Episodes

Disclosed is a method and system for automatically locating the final episode of a previous season of a television show upon identifying the first episode of a new season using a Digital Video Recorder (DVR). The DVR may be equipped with an additional scheduling option and additional intelligence for making the episode to be viewable for a user.

In an exemplary embodiment, a user has configured a season pass recording of a TV show entitled "Show_ABC". The DVR may determine that a sixth season of the TV show "Show_ABC" is starting in two weeks. Suppose the user has configured the DVR to locate/acquire previous season's final episode then the DVR may consult an episode listing for a given series of episodes for determining episode number of the previous season's final episode. The determining may be done through, but not limited to, an Internet search and a local storage if the DVR is configured to store episode numbers of prior airings of the episodes of the series.

The DVR may also locate and acquire content of the desired episode by, but not limited to, looking in a program guide for an upcoming airing and scheduling said episode for recording, or consulting a legal online source that have been previously configured by the user. An order of the sources for searching may be customized by the user. For an example, free sources may be preferred over paid sources.
