Abstract

This invention relates to design of electrode stack for purification of water by electro-deionization (EDI). An existing design for EDI cell employs D-shaped spacers that are stacked to form the cell. The invention incorporates modifications to the D-spacer with side supports added as shown in Fig. 1. These supports engage with the matching grooves in the aluminum side panels as shown in Fig. 2 and prevent the D-spacers from deforming under high temperature and high-pressure conditions. As shown in Fig. 1 these side supports are elevated above the normal surface of the spacer on one side, to provide retention for the C-spacer gaskets in the areas corresponding to the grooves in the aluminum side plate. The invention enables high temperature sanitization of the EDI stack, without requiring salt injection in concentrate stream, while preventing damage and deformation to the spacers.

EDI STACK D-SPACER SIDE SUPPORT

BACKGROUND

This invention relates to design of electrode stack for purification of water by electro-deionization (EDI). Electro-deionization utilizes an electrode stack to ionize water molecules and separate dissolved ions (impurities) from water. It is required to design the stack geometry to facilitate easy sanitization with high volume capacity and performance. The invention disclosed here is a new design of spacer stack with modified side support that meets the above requirements.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

An existing design for EDI cell employs D-shaped spacers that are stacked to form the cell. The invention incorporates modifications to the D-spacer with side supports added as shown in Fig. 1. These supports engage with matching grooves in the aluminum side panels as shown in Fig. 2 and prevent the D-spacers from deforming under high temperature and high-pressure conditions. As shown in Fig. 1 these side supports are elevated above the normal surface of the spacer on one side, to provide retention for the C-spacer gaskets in the areas corresponding to the grooves in the aluminum side plate.

The side supports engage with the matching grooves in the stack side plates. Stack is compressed and its integrity is secured by the set of bolts and nuts. The tight compression between the side plates and all plastic components of the stack keeps the side supports in the grooves.
