Abstract

The invention discloses a patient transport system to carry a patient across Positron Emission Tomography (PET) gap region. The patient transport system comprises a carriage assembly and a slide blade assembly. The carriage assembly comprises multiple components and is mounted on a bridge. The bridge comprises two parts such that the PET gap region is free of attenuating material. The carriage assembly and the slide blade assembly are configured to carry the patient across the PET gap region without tipping. The slide blades have grooves and spherical screw that support the carriage assembly.

FIELD OF INVENTION

The present invention relates generally to positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance (PET/MR) hybrid systems and more particularly to a technique for transporting a patient across gap in the PET scanner of the PET/MR hybrid system.

                                  BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Positron Emission Tomography/Magnetic Resonance (PET/MR) scan is generally performed at the same time for same region of interest to acquire a three dimensional structural image as well as an image of functional process.  Such images are constructed by simultaneous detection of two 511KeV photons count.  Such detection events occur along a line between detectors of the PET/MR scanning system.  Avoiding gamma ray attenuation is critical for good PET image quality (IQ).  Gama ray attenuation can be minimized by reducing or eliminating material in region of PET ring.  One source of attenuating material is patient transport system used for carrying patient across PET gap region.

Various techniques are used for transporting patients across the PET gap region. These conventional techniques include immovable patient gantries and mobile gantry.  However, these patient gantries include magnetic material that attenuates gamma rays to some extent.

Hence, there exists a need for an improved technique of transporting patients across PET gap region with reduced attenuation to obtain higher image IQ.

                              BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The invention discloses a patient transport system to carry a patient across Positron Emission Tomography (PET) gap region in a PET/MR scanning system.  The patient transport system comprises a carriage assembly and a slide blade assembly.  The carriage assembly comprises multiple components and is mounted on a bridge.  The bridge comprises two parts such that the PET gap region is free of attenuating material.  The carriage assembly and the slide blade assembly are configured to carry the patient across the PET gap region without tipping.

                         DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The present invention provides a patient transport system to carry a patient across Positron Emission Tomography (PET) gap region in a PET/MR scanning system. Magnet bore of the PET scanner comprises a bridge and a roller support.  The bridge includes two parts configured to leave the PET gap region clear of support material for patient transport system that may attenuate gamma rays.  The patient transport system comprises a carriage assembly and a slide blade assembly.
