Disclosed is a system that provides business intelligence for viewing and analyzing a business’s profitability by combining revenue and cost data for all the products and portraying them with regard to emergence, which is a value that reflects the market opportunity as well as the expected life-span of the product. The invention enables decision-makers to navigate through different data landscapes and manage data by instantly reconfiguring data to different views, thereby allowing exploration of data in a meaningful way that enables users to build knowledge.

Traditional profit and loss statements show profitability data for a single product. High level financial indicators, such as total revenue and spending, reflect the general health of the business. Both fail to provide knowledge to decision-makers who need to understand how individual products and product lines fit into the profitability portfolio of the entire business, and how the business as a whole is positioned in terms of clients, product lines, and specific product offerings.

To address this problem, data is combined from various sources and structured so that it can be shown relative to all other data, and then grouped or isolated accordingly. The invention contains methods for grouping and ungrouping data, for isolating data, for computing emergence based on expected market response, and a graphical user interface (GUI) that enables user manipulation and analysis.
