Introduction

It is typically time consuming and difficult for people to organize manually large numbers of photographs for sharing with friends and family.  In light of the popularity of cameras on smartphones, more and more photographs (“photos”) are being geotagged, which presents an opportunity to use geolocation to organize photos.  The functionality we propose for using geolocation to organize photos is illustrated in the use case set forth below.

Example Use Case

Sunset Example

In this example, six (6) photos are taken within two minutes of one another at 6:30 pm.  Of these six photos, two (2) photos are taken by a smartphone and are geolocated.  The location at which the two photos are taken is a popular beach in Honolulu, Hawaii that faces west.  On the day on which the photos are taken, the sunset time in Honolulu is 6:30 pm.  Based on this information, the other four (4) photos, all taken from a single lens reflex (SLR) camera, can be geotagged automatically with a high degree of probability.

The four photos taken from the SLR camera do not have any faces in them.  The color histogram of each of these photos shows an abundance of red, yellow, and purple colors.  Based on this information, it can be determined that these photos are probably photos of the sunset over the ocean.  Further, one of these photos stands out from the others in terms of exposure and saturation.  This photo can be highlighted automatically as a favorite sunset photo.
