User Interface Layout Optimizing The Management of Multiple Chats In an Instant Message Environment

Users of Instant Message (IM) tools often need to talk with multiple people at the same time, but maintain separate conversations. Thus, the user has to open a few IM

windows, shifting focus between the windows. That action is time consuming, confusing, and error prone, especially with too many chat partners.

As addition to knowledge, disclosed is a new user interface (UI) for IM tools that merges disparate chat windows into one, so that the user does not need to shift active chatting

windows. For each chat partner, only the latest chat sentences are displayed in the

window. The chats' UIs are presented in a scrolling marquee bubble fashion with meaningful attributes for the following:

• The ordering of the rows (Chats)

• The speed of the scrolling marquee

• The shape of the bubble

• Other user-defined attributes

The IM tool window with this invention has the following key characteristics:

• All persons chatting with the user are displayed in one window

• The latest chat logs for the user and one chat partner are displayed together in each window section, showing who sent the last message

The invention is also able to change the characteristics of the chat bubbles based on some characteristics of chatting contents or the chat partner.

Figure 1: Example window of IM tool applying this invention. The user is simultaneously chatting with three chat partners: User 1, User 2, and User 3. The last sentence from each chat partner and the user are displayed closed to show the relationship. Three triangles in the left are three buttons. Once the user clicks any of them, chat history of current user and corresponding partner can be displayed.
