A method and system for preventing use of a mobile phone while driving a vehicle is disclosed. The method and system combines the use of Global Positioning System (GPS), accelerometer and cell phone signals with a built-in front facing camera as a means to prevent the use of the mobile phone while driving.

Disclosed is a method and system for preventing use of a mobile phone while driving a vehicle. The method and system combines the use of Global Positioning System (GPS), accelerometer, and cell phone signals with a built-in camera of the mobile phone as a means to prevent the use of the mobile phone while driving.

The method and system determines if the mobile phone is in a moving state. If it is determined that the mobile phone is in a moving state, then the method and system determines if a user of the mobile phone is visually focusing on the mobile phone for more than a certain time period. If it is determined that the user is not sustaining eye contact with the mobile phone and the mobile phone is in a moving state, then the method and system locks the mobile phone. Thus, by combining the knowledge of the state of motion of the mobile phone and the visual focus of the user, the method and system determines whether the user is driving the vehicle at the time of using the mobile phone and accordingly locks the mobile phone.

In a scenario, the method first detects whether the mobile phone is in a moving state. The state of motion can be detected based on input signals from one of, but not limited to, the GPS and the accelerometer.
