Abstract

The invention proposes a brake mechanism for retarding movement of mobile equipment, such as, mobile X-ray equipment. The brake mechanism may be used to bring the mobile X-ray equipment in motion either on slopes or even surface to a halt position. The brake mechanism is configured around a compact footprint with a considerable braking strength. The brake mechanism includes a cam and an actuator among other components for effective braking. The brake is synchronous such that the brake is activated from either side of the medical equipment. In case, the brake is activated from one end of the equipment, the other end of the brake also gets actuated and holds the equipment in position.

FIELD OF INVENTION

The invention generally relates to mobile medical equipment and more particularly to a brake mechanism for mobile medical equipment.

                                      

                                            BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Brake assembly is a critical part of mobile equipments, such as, mobile X-ray equipment. The brake avoids unintended motion of the mobile equipment when a user positions a patient to acquire an X-ray image. In case the mobile equipment is devoid of brake mechanism, the mobile equipment may inadvertently move on a slope or in uneven surface in uncontrolled manner. In such cases, the medical care giver or user is required to hold the mobile equipment in a static position which increases patient positioning time and radiation exposure of patient. Such exposure to unnecessary radiations is highly undesirable in a patient who is in a very critical condition, such as accident or emergency cases.

Several conventional brake mechanisms are known in the art for retarding motion of the mobile equipment. A conventional technique includes cam mechanism for retarding motion of the mobile equipment. However, such conventional technique is expensive, includes large number of parts, and has increased footprint and the manufacturing precision for parts are high. Another conventional technique includes mechanical brake for retarding motion of mobile equipments. However, such technique is also associated with a large footprint and brake engagement noise which is annoying and disturbing. Yet another conventional technique includes cam and linkages mechanism. However, the brake mechanism of such technique is not very effective in braking and has high failure rates.

Therefore, there is need in the art for an improved and cost effective braking technique in mobile medical equipment.
