Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide a linear-action door gap guard that comprises a rigid plastic sheet a cam plate bracket and a connecting pin, wherein the connecting pin attaches the rigid plastic sheet to an appliance door panel via the cam plate bracket. The rigid plastic sheet moves in a linear fashion as it covers the gap created between the appliance and the appliance door when the appliance door is in an open position. Embodiments of the present invention provide a cost effective means for achieving safety requirements of an appliance.

LINEAR-ACTION DOOR GAP GUARD

BACKGROUND

     Embodiments of the present invention relate generally to home appliances. More specifically, embodiments of the present invention relate to a home appliance comprising safety devices that prevent the entry of foreign objects into a gap created when the appliance door is in an opened position.

     When opening most household appliance doors, a gap forms between the appliance door and the appliance unit itself. Injury to extremities or damage to foreign objects could occur if either becomes introduced into the gap area during the opening and closing of the appliance door. As a result, there exists a need for a device that will prevent the entry of foreign objects into the gap space created.

BRIEF DESCRIPTON OF THE DRAWINGS

     Figure 1A is an overhead view of a linear-action door gap guard in a closed position in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.

     Figure 1B is an overhead view of a linear-action door gap guard in an open position in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.

     Figure 1C depicts the movement profile of the elements of a linear-action door gap guard in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

     Embodiments of the present invention provide a linear-action door gap guard. The linear-action door gap guard covers the gap created between an appliance door and the appliance when the appliance door is in an opened position. By employing linear movement as opposed to curvilinear movement, embodiments of the present invention provide a cost effective gap guard that improves the safety of the appliance.

     As shown in Figures 1A and 1B, the linear-action door gap guard comprises a rigid plastic sheet, a cam plate bracket and a connecting pin, wherein the connecting pin attaches the rigid plastic sheet to an appliance door panel via the cam plate bracket.

     The rigid plastic sheet is arranged parallel to the appliance, on the hinged side, and rests between the appliance and an object next to the appliance (i.e. a kitchen cabinet) when the appliance door is in a closed position. The connecting pin extends vertically from the top of the rigid plastic sheet. According to

one embodiment, the connecting pin is formed as a part of the rigid plastic sheet. According to another embodiment, the connecting pin is detachably connected to the rigid plastic sheet.

     The cam plate bracket is attached to the end of the hinged side of the appliance door so that the face of the cam plate bracket is flush with the top plane of the appliance door panel.
