- Technical Field.
 The present invention relates to a discharge apparatus for a chip bin, comprising an aperture outlet device having multiple positionable arms capable of manipulating the size of an aperture formed there between at a bottom discharge opening.
- Related Art.
 To achieve uniform impregnation of cooking liquor during the production of pulp from cellulosic material (such as wood chips), it is useful to first remove air from the cellulosic material by steaming it within a vertical vessel. Such vessels are commonly known as “chip bins.” In such conventional systems, chips are typically fed into the top of the chip bin, steamed, moved in a downward direction through the bin into a chip meter followed by a low pressure feeder, and deployed through a horizontal steaming vessel. Inside the horizontal steaming vessel, air removal and steaming is completed. The treated cellulosic material is then pressurized (for example a high pressure feeder, or pump(s)) and fed into a digester.. An example of a conventional chip bin is the DIAMONDBACK® chip bin sold by Andritz Inc. of Glens Falls, New York, and in described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,500,083.
 A conventional chip bin provides an area for steaming and removing air from the cellulosic material, as well as a space for storing cellulosic material for feeding a continuous or regular supply of material. A conventional chip bin also typically comprises an open bottom where cellulosic material exits the chip bin via a chip meter before proceeding to a low pressure feeder and to other process equipment downstream of the low pressure feeder. Chip bins may be several meters in height and are typically positioned well above the ground along with the necessary outlet equipment, including the chip meter, or a chip screw or star feeder. With an open bottom to the chip bin, the chip meter also functions as a “stop” when necessary to discontinue flow from the chip bin.
 Discharging cellulosic material from a chip bin can be problematic due to a tendency for the material to “channel” or clog within the bin interior or the discharge device, causing an unpredictable and uneven flow of material from the chip bin. Further discharge problems can occur when there is a need to alter or completely stop the rate of flow of cellulosic material from the chip bin.
 Accordingly, there is a need for an improved chip bin discharge apparatus, more particularly a chip bin discharge apparatus with improved capability of providing increased control over the rate of discharge of cellulosic material from the chip bin. There is also a need for an improved chip bin discharge apparatus that reduces clogging and channeling within the chip bin. There is a further need for an improved chip bin discharge apparatus that provides for a more predictable and even flow of cellulosic material. It is to these and...
