Background

Today, oil and grease, or other liquid media are normally used as lubricant for the joints. Between two chambers in bearing, gearboxes or robot arm, oil-sealings are introduced to prevent the passage of the lubricant. O-ring, radial sealing, double-lip sealing and so on are used for different kinds of sealing, with different lubricant media.

However the leakage is a highlighted trouble to the industry robot manufacturers. In order to solve this problem, sealing is always a high-demanding technology. Many solutions were proposed, and tests were implemented, but most of them are time-consuming and less cost effective. Leakage still occurs usually, and may bring severe sequence in the painting application, or in the clean room environment, or in the food and beverage industry.

The maintenance of the liquid lubricant is also a problem. It is required to monitor the Fe or other staff content in the lubricant to promise its performance. After long-term work, the liquid lubricant also needs to be replaced. It also leads to a lot of man power.

Additionally, the viscosity of lubricant is serious with the decreasing of temperature. When the robot works under low temperature, lubricant becomes thicker, resulting in a higher start torque. In some damned case, the robot could not start without pre-warm. On the other hand, the lubricant lost its function quickly under extra high temperature environment, where the liquid becomes too rare to establish the film on the sliding surface.

Description

The main purpose for this design is to provide a maintenance free solution for robot lubrication. The dry lubricants despite being in the solid phase instead of traditional liquid media are proposed for robot lubrication.
