Disclosed is a method and system for comparing alphanumeric text strings in a dataset to appropriately emphasize more informative and varying characters of the alphanumeric string, and de-emphasize less informative characters of the alphanumeric string. Firstly, the method and system compares the most varying and least varying parts of the alphanumeric strings by using an algorithm. The algorithm is applicable to user interface (UI) displayable attributes that are commonly long alphanumeric strings or often contain a repeated string of alphanumeric characters. The method and system disclosed herein applies a string metric to the list of alphanumeric strings in the dataset to determine if there are enough similar strings to issue application of the UI de-emphasis, for example truncation, graying etc. Hence, the resultant UI will be more concise and the informative parts of the dataset are more emphasized.

In exemplary scenarios shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2, the least varying and less informative parts of alphanumeric strings are de-emphasized using truncation i.e. by replacing the least varying and less informative parts with ellipses.

Alternatively, as shown in Figure 3, the least varying and less informative parts of the alphanumeric string are de-emphasized by graying, and emphasizing the more informative and varying parts of the alphanumeric strings by bolding. Figures 4 t...
