Abstract

The invention relates to integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants. The invention suggests an integrated solution for producing substitute natural gas (SNG) and power from coal, particularly low rank coal in remote sites. The system includes a coal gasification to produce syngas, a methanation unit to produce SNG and a SNG feed combined cycle power block. The system is further optimized by collecting heat from exothermic chemical reactions in the SNG production process to facilitate coal drying or improving combined cycle plant thermal efficiency. The solution will also be able adjustment of the end products SNG, power and SNG/Power based on the different day/night and seasonal power/SNG requirements.

BACKGROUND

The invention relates to integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants. Demanding on power and natural gas is and will continue to grow worldwide. However, power demand is peaked during daytime, while substitute natural gas (SNG) demand is generally peaked in summer and winter seasons. Therefore, how to effectively manage the power/SNG production and consumption remains a challenge. An integrated solution for transforming coal to power and SNG will create much higher flexibility to meet the seasonal and day/night demands on these resources with minimal impact on the SNG plant production. Previous approaches in this direction include US20080190024 which proposes a system and method for producing SNG and power using a hydrogasification reactor, while WO2009088568A1 discloses a method of producing SNG and integrating the heat to produce power using steam turbine engine.
