Problem Statement

Currently, Veritas File Replicator (VFR) is able to do periodic replication of files or directories in a Veritas File System (vxfs) to a remote target. The design is based on file-system checkpoints and the vxfs file change log (FCL). But the FCL is inode-based, meaning that inode numbers (of a file and or its parent directory), and sometimes the name of a file, are logged. The logged information never includes the full pathnames of the files or the directories changed. Thus, VFR has to use other filesystem application programming interfaces (APIs) to get an exact picture of the filesystem changes from the FCL information such as the reverse-name-lookup APIs or the vxfs_getparent() API to lookup parent directories for a file. However, this requires a lot of namespace manipulation to get an exact picture of the filesystem changes from the FCL information. It must also be able to send these namespace changes to the remote target in an appropriate sequence so that dependency of namespace operations is appropriately handled (e.g., the child directory must be created afte...
