Abstract

Majority of the search systems leverage only the knowledge or information that are already present in the data. Hence, when the user searches for knowledge that is not present in the system, the search fails. However, other users who are active may often know the required knowledge or information. We present a system that can leverage the knowledge of other users in a pro-active and interactive way, satisfy the user’s information need quickly and enriches the data to be searched on for future searches on-the-fly.

Introduction

Majority of the search systems leverage only the knowledge or information that are already present in the data. Hence, when the user searches for knowledge that is not

present in the system, the search fails. However, other users who are active may often know the required knowledge or information, which the systems fail to leverage.

When the user's information need is not satisfied by searching, the user falls back onto platforms such as forums, question - answer repositories and social networking sites facilitate the collaboration between users so that users can seek information or knowledge from other users. In question - answer repositories such as Yahoo! Answers, searching in the repository, browsing for answers and posting new question are almost three disjoint actions for the user. The user has to post a question, others have to browse new open questions and answer. In forums also, the responsibility of taking the initiative to ask a question remains with the user. Due to intertia and several other human factors, only a small percentage of users are active in asking questions in the forums. Typically forums also depend on a few active knowledgable users who take the responsibility to look through new questions and try to answer them. Social networking sites on the other hand post live feeds to other users, making it easier for them to know if any friend is looking for any help.

The propsed system aims to integrate these functions and presents the user a unified experience. In other words, it aims to leverage the knowledge of other users in a

pro-active and interactive way.

Proposed solution

The primary feature behind our propsed system is a "push" or notification mechanism in a knowledge search system, which is personalized, based on user's expertise and interest. It performs the following actions:

 It notifies experts when help on their known topics are needed

 It notifies the searcher about experts and users interested in similar knowledge...
