Abstract

The present invention relates to a near field communication (NFC) based access control system for a wind turbine. The NFC based control system enables different levels of access to the wind turbine sub-assemblies by a trained or qualified technician. At entrance of the wind turbine, the NFC device is installed and is programmed to be accessed only by people having the NFC enabled device. Smart phones or handset equipped with NFC chips are used by the technicians for the wind turbine access control. The NFC device installed at door of entrance of the wind turbine is connected to a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system of the wind turbine. The NFC device is connected to the SCADA of the wind turbine so that the access record and alarm can be programmed. An NFC tag menu enables easy and accurate maintenance of service record of the wind turbine. Accordingly the NFC based access control system allows only trained technicians with smart phone or handset equipped with NFC chips to access and control the wind turbine.

SMART ACCESS SYSTEM FOR A WIND TURBINE

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates generally to a wind turbine and more particularly to a smart access system for the wind turbine.

Generally, to perform uninterrupted function a wind turbine requires periodic maintenance. Periodic maintenance requires a technician to access the wind turbine sub-assemblies at different levels. Currently, the wind turbine accesses are purely mechanical and includes door lock, pad locks etc. Restricted places and equipment like transformer room or medium voltage (MV) switch gear is guarded with pad locks. Accordingly, only the technician having keys are authorized to access the wind turbine. In some instances, a turbine entry alarm triggers by opening door and a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system sends SMS alarm to wind farm operator. The entry alarm gives no identification of person who opens door.

In some instances, entry of technicians is registered through the SCADA system by turning switch to maintenance mode. The technicians maintain record and input into an automated system using a computer or a handheld device, typically by select items from a menu. The entry may be synchronized with database subsequently. However, such conventional techniques do not affirm person qualification to operate or enter the wind turbine.

It would be desirable to have an improved technique to check identity of the technician or user entering the turbine.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The present invention provides a near field communication (NFC) based access control system for a wind turbine.  NFC based access control system enables different levels of access to the wind turbine sub-assemblies by a trained or qualified technician. At the entrance of the wind turbine, the NFC device is installed which is programmed to be accessed only by the people having the NFC enabled device. The access right is programmed in the NFC enabled device. A technician having a smart phone or handset is equipped with NFC chips. The smart phones or handset equipped with NFC chips are used by the technicians for the wind turbine access control. Two NFC enabled devices are activated by maintaining a distance of not more than 20 cm between them. Accordingly, only trained technicians with smart phone or handset equipped with NFC chips can enter transformer compartment with clearance for high voltage equipment. Figure 1 depicts the NFC based access control system for the wind turbine.
