Much of a user's social and personal information available online via social and professional networking sites, web-based email, eCommerce and travel sites, and more. Finding specific information on a specific site is relatively easy; however, finding and correlating information across different sites requires a higher-level query and is labor intensive.

Consider this higher-level event-based query: What did was purchased for Friend A's 18th birthday and what was that friend's reaction?

In order to answer this, the user may look up Friend A's birthday on a social networking site. With the birthday (time) information, the user then searches for past purchases on an eCommerce site, and searches for email communications in a web-based account during that period. In other words, the user first looks up the time in question based on an event/occasion, and then uses the resulting time information to look up and correlate information from other sites. This is a time consuming manual effort.

The invention is a Holistic Insight System (HIS) that allows the user to specify a single query as input. The system then searches multiple sites to retrieve and automatically correlate the results based on time. With this invention, the user can to find a more holistic social and personal insight without the typical manual and labor intensive search and correlation effort.

The system uses time as a default and common dimension (other dimensions such as location or other custom dimensions are also possible) for searching across different sites. Given a user's query, the system searches one or more sites with the input criteria. The inputs for the query can be a simple event, time points, or other relevant criteria, and allows customizations (stored in profile) on which sites/sources to search. Once the resulting time (or a set of time points) is determined, the system automatically uses the time or other criteria to search the other sites and present the correlated results to the user.

For example, consider the higher-level query: What was purchased for Friend A's 18th birthday and what was that friend's reaction?

The invention looks up the 18th birthday of User A in the preferred social networking

website and identifies 10/1/1998. Using 10/1/1998, the system then finds on other

websites the relevant information, such as messages, purchase history, etc., to provide the user with holistic insight around that event/time.

This example can also be extended to a marketing scenario, where a marketing

company can use this invention to find out insight based on anonymous data.
