Disclosed is a method for locating a server in a data center through the Power Distribution Units (PDUs) by incorporating a Management Module box with an Indoor Positioning System functionality that plugs into the PDUs. When a server is pinged, the associated Rack Management Model is identified, and then the server is identified using the information stored in the PDU.

A data center can be comprised of hundreds of servers. Locating a single server among these is a difficult and time-consuming task.

One current solution is to install installing electronic tags on every server and use these tags to locate the servers. This is not efficient.

An alternate solution for locating a server in a data center is to create a management module that connects with the Power Distribution Units (PDUs), which have the server Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, and have the network show the servers associated with it.

A method is needed to assist administrators with locating a single server amongst many in a datacenter.

The core idea of the invention is to create a management module with an Indoor Positioning System installed, and then attach it to the PDUs. Because the PDUs have all the server information, when a server is pinged, the associated management module can come up and the location can be traced. This eliminates the need to make any changes to the servers or the software. The work is all done in the management module, saving time and money. In addition, locating a server is simplified, so any problems can be addressed quickly and easily.

To implement the method for locating a server in a data center through the PDUs:
